Forestry Mulching
We grind standing brush, saplings and small trees into mulch with a mulcher head on our tracked loader. The chips stay on the ground and hold the soil in place.

Land clearing in Charles Town, WV follows the city's growth. Charles Town had 2,907 people in 2000 and 6,534 at the 2020 census. Part of that jump came from annexing housing subdivisions built on land around the original city. Under those lots sits karst ground, where sinkholes and sinking streams carry water down into the rock.
Marloy Hill Enterprise is a land clearing and excavation company based in Augusta, in Hampshire County. Charles Town sits inside the 50 to 75 mile radius we work from Augusta. A tracked loader with a mulcher head handles brush clearing, and a mini excavator digs out stumps and drain lines. Estimates are free, so call or text (540) 327-1400.

Charles Town and Ranson sit side by side in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The 2024 estimate put Charles Town at 8,869 people, up from 6,534 in 2020. Jefferson County, at 57,701 people in 2020, is one of the few West Virginia counties with large scale growth. Many residents work in Washington, D.C. or Northern Virginia.
Every new house needs a cleared, level place to sit. We take brush and saplings off the building area and lift the stumps. Then grading and site prep shapes a pad that sheds water. A gravel driveway runs from the pad out to the road.
West Virginia requires a construction stormwater permit once a construction site disturbs one acre or more. Jefferson County sites also file the Bay TMDL Addendum with that application. The landowner or builder files the paperwork and checks with the county. We point out what we see on the ground.
Charles Town sits over ground the U.S. Geological Survey calls the Shenandoah Valley karst. Karst in this region shows caves, sinkholes, sinking streams and underground conduits. On a Charles Town lot, that can look like a low spot where storm water disappears.
Much of the water here travels underground. Springs supply more than 85 percent of the stream flow in the Shenandoah River basin. Before we dig, we look at where water comes onto a lot and where it leaves.
French drains and drainage trenches carry roof and yard water away from a house or a drive. Trench lines and outlets get set around any sinkhole on the lot. Excavation for a pad or a lane gets laid out the same way.
On its east side, Jefferson County is bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and Loudoun County, Virginia. It is the only West Virginia county with both the Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah River. Harpers Ferry sits 7 miles east of Charles Town. Just east of Harpers Ferry, the Potomac River runs through the lowest ground in West Virginia.
Ground toward the mountain is a different job from open valley land. Wooded lots there can be steep, with brush and saplings grown in thick. Our tracked loader carries a mulcher head that chews that growth down to chips. That is forestry mulching, and the chips stay on the ground as cover.
Heavier brush and small trees go to the mini excavator and its brush cutter. With a bucket in place of the cutter, the same machine digs out stumps. That puts stump removal on the same job as the clearing. The loader runs on tracks, and tracks hold a slope better than tires.
Jefferson County farms grew grain and other crops through the 1700s and 1800s. Horses are part of Charles Town's history too. The Charles Town race track opened in 1933, on land bought from the Charles Town Horse Show Association.
Farm and horse ground stays useful only while the edges stay open. A fence row left alone fills with brush and saplings that shade out grass and lean on the wire. Fence line clearing cuts that growth back so a fence can be fixed or replaced.
Bigger areas that have grown up in brush get bush hogged or mulched back to open ground. The mini excavator pulls the stumps that would catch a mower. If you keep horses, open edges make a pasture fence easier to check.

We cut overgrown fields, pastures and fence rows back down to open ground. A brush cutter on the mini excavator reaches banks, ditch lines and fence rows from level footing.

We clear wooded and grown-up building lots for a house, a cabin, a mobile home or a shop. Brush gets mulched where it stands, and stumps come out where the house and the drive go.

We dig stumps out with a mini excavator, root ball and all. The hole gets backfilled and bladed level so the spot can be mowed or built on.

Mini excavator digging for trenches, ditches, driveway cuts and dirt work. We clear and dig on the same job across Hampshire County and the Eastern Panhandle.

We level pads, smooth rutted ground and shape lots after clearing. The finished grade sends water away from your buildings instead of toward them.

We cut in new gravel driveways and lanes on rural lots, and regrade drives that have rutted or washed out. The surface gets crowned so water runs off the drive instead of down it.

We regrade private gravel roads that have washed out or worn into ruts and potholes. The crown goes back in and the ditch lines get cleaned out so water leaves the road.

We install French drains and drainage trenches that move water away from houses, cabins, barns and driveways. The mini excavator digs the line, then pipe and washed stone go in so the ground drains.

We clear grown up fence rows and property lines on farms and acreage across Hampshire County. The row comes back to a clean line your fence crew can work from.

We bring our tracked skid steer to grade yards and lanes, spread gravel and topsoil, and fill washouts. A forestry mulcher head on the same loader grinds brush and saplings where they stand.
