How Much Does Excavation Cost in West Virginia?
An equipment rental cost guide puts a mini excavator with an operator at $85 to $150 an hour. A pricing guide written for operators lists $90 to $150. A 2026 excavation pricing report gives a national average of $110 to $155 an hour for the same machine.
Many operators set a minimum of 2 to 4 hours, or a minimum charge of $200 to $400. The operators’ guide gives sample flat prices of $400 for a small trench and $1,500 for backyard grading. These are market numbers, not our price list. For excavation and dirt work in Hampshire County, the price comes after we look at the ground.
What does a mini excavator with an operator cost per hour?
Most small digging jobs get billed by the hour. The pricing guide for operators calls hourly pricing by far the most common method. A mini excavator hourly rate covers the machine and the person running it.
The 2026 report puts all excavation billed by the hour at $110 to $325, machine and operator included. Light residential work, the tier with mini excavators and shallow trenching, runs $110 to $150 an hour. Rock and other difficult digging sits in its top tier, at $400 or more an hour.

What does skid steer work cost per hour?
A skid steer is a small loader that moves and shapes dirt and stone. A mini excavator is the machine that digs.
The 2026 report puts the national average skid steer hourly rate at $85 to $155. Its driveway and patio row pairs a skid steer with a mini excavator. That work averages $110 to $190 an hour. A typical job takes 4 to 8 hours and costs $1,000 to $3,000.
Our loader is a tracked skid steer, also called a compact track loader. Its bucket grades ground and spreads the stone a supplier drops off. Its forestry mulcher head clears brush. Our skid steer services page covers that work by the job.
How do excavation contractors bill for a job?
Some contractors quote a day rate when a job runs a full day or more. The pricing guide for operators puts day rates at $600 to $1,200.
Others quote a flat price for one clear job, like the sample prices up top. The operators’ guide says flat pricing works best when the contractor can estimate the hours well.
Then there is the trailer. Moving a mini excavator takes a truck, a trailer, fuel and time to load and unload. Many contractors charge a $50 to $150 delivery fee for that. Others build travel time into the hourly rate.
The 2026 report suggests bundling digging tasks into one job to cut mobilization costs. Before work starts, ask whether a minimum applies and whether travel time counts.
What moves excavation cost on West Virginia ground?
Rock is the big one. The operators’ guide says soil, rocks, tree roots and site access all affect how long a job takes. A county plan from the Hampshire County Planning Commission names shale as one of the county’s three rock types.
The same plan puts Weikert and Berks channery silt loams at the top of its soil list. They cover 14.5 percent of the soils in Hampshire and Mineral counties. Weikert shale silt loam adds another 8.3 percent.
USDA describes Weikert as a shallow soil weathered from layered shale and siltstone. Its sample profile holds 30 percent shale chips in the top 7 inches. Bedrock sits 10 to 20 inches down. A trench that reaches that layer digs slower than one in deep dirt.
Slope comes next. The county plan describes 642 square miles of mountainous slopes and river valleys. A machine working across a hillside moves slower than one on flat ground.
Access and wet ground round out the list. The 2026 report says rates trend higher with restricted access and hard ground below the surface. A tight gate or a soft, wet field adds time before any digging starts.
Is it cheaper to rent a mini excavator and dig it yourself?
Sometimes. One equipment rental cost guide puts a mini excavator rental at $150 to $550 a day. A popular size for a weekend project runs $200 to $350 a day. A week runs $500 to $1,700, about the cost of 3 to 4 daily rates.
Extra charges sit on top. Delivery runs $75 to $200 each way within 10 to 20 miles. At 20 to 50 miles it runs $150 to $400 or more each way. A damage waiver adds 10 to 15 percent of the rental rate.
The guide says attachments, fuel, insurance and delivery can push the total 20 to 30 percent past the base rate. Its sample day of backyard trenching comes to $663 with delivery. A renter with a truck and trailer could cut that to about $363.
Hiring out has its own math. At an excavator hourly rate of $85 to $150, four hours comes to $340 to $600. A delivery fee may come on top.
For a half day of digging, the two bills land close together. The rental guide lists faster work first among the reasons to hire an operator.

Digging a stump out is priced per stump, and our stump removal cost guide lays out the published ranges.
